We’re stopped at the top end of the airline yard in Milwaukee... Looks like were on train 262 the Thunderhawk from Seattle to Chicago... Our portion of the 2000 some miles are the 92.9 between Portage and Milwaukee otherwise known as the east end of the LaCrosse Division... It's got to be 1972 as our lead unit was brand new and the two FP's used to be passenger locos but since Amtrak (NRPC) they’ve relegated to the freight pool like me.
I got my promotion to Engineer in 1970 so I’ve only been a HOGGER for a short time - but loving every minute of it. Normally this train just changes crews on the fly at the depot, but for some reason we’ve entered the yard via Blue Mound One... Looks like we we're plowing snow west of the sub-continental divide west of Brookfield... It was not unusual to have heavy snow west of there and be like spring the last few miles into Milwaukee or vice/versa, sunny day down from Portage then get a Lake effect snow storm the last few miles into Milwaukee.
